One method of achieving a greater understanding of what’s really going on for someone is story listening. People tend to share more honestly when we listen to and connect with them through stories. A story is defined in this case as a personal account of one’s experience.

Story listening is intentional listening. It entails hearing the words and sounds and seeing the body language of someone sharing a story as a method of understanding what they mean when they express themselves. It takes into account listening for what people aren't directly saying, what they might be too reluctant to say, or don’t realize they're saying.

Story listening also involves asking insightful questions designed to induce the story teller to share more and to think more deeply about what they're saying.

This training can be from 1.5 to 3 hours long. Areas covered include:
